She told the world last week about the birth of her baby via her Instagram account. The baby’s father is her boyfriend, Erik Asla. Asla is a photographer for fashion and fine art and the two have been dating for over two years.  “They announced the little boy’s name is York Banks Asla. The announcement took everyone by surprise as the surrogacy was kept a secret. Banks and Asla posted online thanking the woman who carried their surrogate baby. They called her an angel who helped them have their miracle. It is such a good thing for families and family formation. Especially in this age where we are experiencing backlash in Europe and other countries, where there is negative publicity and discourse on gestational surrogacy calling it baby-buying and the exploitation of women. Tyra Banks, as part of the high-profile celebrity world, celebrating the birth of her and Erik’s baby boy, and showing their sincere gratitude to their surrogate shows us that surrogacy is a very positive and fulfilling experience and a fundamental way for people with certain infertility issues to have their children.
