Books are published annually to keep parents up-to-date on recent safety features, pros and cons of new baby items, etc. A very important topic when expecting a child is what to feed them: breastmilk or formula? While arguments exist to support the benefits of both breastmilk and formula, it is worthwhile to stay informed in order to make an educated decision. When developing the surrogacy contract, the intended parents and gestational surrogate can decide whether breastmilk will be provided. For IPs who want their child to have breastmilk, it is not uncommon for the surrogate to pump and send breastmilk to their intended parents. Additionally, intended parents who choose the formula route have many options to pick from, as well. #### **Benefits of Breastmilk** Several resources claim breastmilk can improve the child’s health. Breastmilk contains antibodies that help the infant fight off colds and viruses. It is also believed to help reduce the risk of the child developing allergies and asthma when they get older. Breastmilk is packed with nutrients. Interestingly, breastmilk will inherently adjust nutrient levels based on the passage of time to increase the benefits for the child. #### **Formula** Just because a child cannot be breastfed does not mean they are destined to suffer from chronic ear infections, allergies, or develop severe asthma. Breastfeeding is beneficial for both child and mother; however, in cases where this option isn’t chosen, formula is there to lead the way. #### **Benefits of Formula** One of the most noted benefits of formula feeding is sharing the experience. Formula, or bottle feeding, allows any loved ones to share in the experience. Formula is available at any time. It is convenient and less cumbersome than toting around a breast pump or containers of breastmilk. There are many different formulas available. It is important to research options and find one you believe will be the best for the child. Whether receiving expressed milk from the gestational surrogate or starting with formula, you will make the right decision for your child. ***Please note**: This is a general synopsis.
